The world’s medical breakthroughs, brought within reach.
Medigene sources proven medical technologies from around the world and connects Malaysian patients, families and clinicians to them. Our first programme: Kanexthal™, a one-time gene therapy for transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia, developed by our partner Kanglin Biotec.
A bridge between global innovation and local care
Promising treatments often reach patients years after they work elsewhere. We shorten that gap by finding credible technologies, building the partnerships to access them, and guiding each patient through the process.
Technologies with evidence
We scout therapies and medical solutions worldwide and prioritise those with clinical data, regulatory standing and a manufacturer committed to access.
Patients, doctors and centres
We link Malaysian patients and their specialists with certified treatment centres and the technology partners behind them.
The whole journey
From the first enquiry to follow-up at home: records, coordination, travel and communication, handled by one team.
One treatment aimed at the root cause of β-thalassemia
People with transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia cannot make enough healthy haemoglobin. Most rely on blood transfusions every few weeks and daily iron chelation for life.
Kanexthal uses the patient’s own blood stem cells and adds a functional β-globin gene, so the body can produce healthy haemoglobin on its own. It is designed as a one-time, potentially curative treatment.
Source: Kanglin Biotec, data available as of October 2025 (17 patients in investigator-initiated trial, 9 in Phase 1, 40+ real-world). Commercially available in certified hospitals in China under a pilot access programme.

We keep the patient, their local doctor and the treatment centre in touch through long-term monitoring.
What we bring to Malaysia
Available programmes, therapies in development with our partners, and the services that connect them to patients and providers.
Is Kanexthal worth asking about?
Three quick questions help us understand your situation before we talk. This is not a medical assessment. Whether a patient is suitable can only be decided by the treating specialists after a full evaluation.
Frequently asked
What is transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia?
It is an inherited blood disorder where the body makes too little β-globin, a part of haemoglobin. People with the transfusion-dependent form need regular blood transfusions to survive, and usually iron chelation therapy to manage the iron that builds up from transfusions.
Is Kanexthal the same as a bone marrow transplant?
No donor is needed. Kanexthal uses the patient’s own blood stem cells, which are collected, given a functional β-globin gene with a lentiviral vector, tested, and infused back. Because the cells are the patient’s own, there is no need to find a matched donor.
Where is the treatment given?
Kanexthal is currently commercially available at certified hospital(s) in China under a pilot access programme. Medigene coordinates referral, travel and follow-up for patients from Malaysia.
What results have been reported?
According to Kanglin Biotec, more than 70 patients had been treated as of October 2025, and all patients treated so far achieved transfusion independence. The longest follow-up is about 4.5 years. Your specialist can explain what these results mean for an individual patient.
What are the risks?
Like other gene therapies that use stem cell collection and conditioning chemotherapy, the treatment carries risks. The treatment centre’s specialists discuss safety and side effects in detail during evaluation. Kanglin publishes safety information on the Kanexthal website.
How much does it cost?
Costs depend on the patient’s clinical needs, the treatment centre and travel arrangements. After a records review we can provide an itemised estimate.
I’m a doctor or hospital. Can we work with you?
Yes. We work with haematologists, hospitals and patient organisations in Malaysia on referrals, education and bringing new technologies into local practice. Use the enquiry form and choose “Healthcare professional”.
